Custody of grandchild?

my 21/2 yr old grandsons father who has been arrested with breaking into a store and stealing thousands worth of merchandise to support his drug habit, he is now in rehab. decided he wants to get split custody of my grandson. why now after he wanted nothing to do with him for 2 1/2 years. we live in vt. does anyone know what would happen
